Procida - the insider's pitoresque island in Naples Bay

Alcaraz, the renowned Spanish tennis star, was recently seen on the Island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples. He has been alternating between different vacation spots with friends and recently chose Procida as a peaceful retreat to escape and recharge. Procida is a small, authentic Italian island in the Bay of Naples, covering just 4 square kilometres. Renowned for its pastel-coloured fishing villages, relaxed pace, and historic charm, it’s a popular day-trip spot accessible from Naples. The island's most iconic and photogenic fishing village is Marina di Corricella, which is entirely pedestrian-only and lined with vibrant, closely packed houses—ideal for enjoying fresh seafood by the water. At the highest point stands Terra Murata, the fortified medieval core, home to the 16th-century Palazzo d'Avalos, a former royal palace and prison. Procida's vintage beauty was showcased in the classic films Il Postino and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Visit "Il Postino Beach" at Spiaggia Cala del Pozzo Vecchio. The top beaches include Pozzo Vecchio and the expansive sandy shores of Chiaia Beach, featuring excellent beach clubs with chair and umbrella rentals. We’re quite fond of Procida and have highlighted this beautiful island several times on our blog. Feel free to explore our previous posts for more insights.

Procida’s traditional cuisine highlights the freshness of local seafood paired with aromatic island citrus fruits and herbs. Must-try dishes include "Coniglio alla Procidana" (Procida-style rabbit), surprisingly for an island, this land-based specialty involves slow-cooked rabbit in a terracotta pot with cherry tomatoes, garlic, white wine, chili, and a variety of herbs like mint and marjoram. "Insalata di Limoni" (lemon salad), a fresh dish made from thick-rind, edible-pith.  Spaghetti with Sea Urchin: A classic island dish, featuring spaghetti tossed with fresh sea urchin roe, which emphasizes the rich, briny taste of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Stuffed Squid ("Calamari 'mbuttunati"): Whole squid filled with a mixture of chopped tentacles, stale bread, capers, olives, garlic, and parsley, then simmered in tomato sauce. "Lingua di Procida", the island's iconic pastry, made of aromatic, oval-shaped puff pastry filled with pastry cream, often with added lemon zest. The Procida cuisine blends seafood with inland influences, resulting in nuanced flavors.
