La Giardina Guest House - Chieri - Piemont
Nestled among the rolling hills near Turin (28 minutes drive), Italy, La Giardina Guest House offers a serene luxury escape in a restored 12th-century convent. Transformed into an intimate, art-rich guesthouse with warm, stylish interiors, it is surrounded by fields, forests, and country roads close to the picturesque towns of Chieri and Cambiano—ideal for exploring the cultural and culinary delights of Italy's Piedmont region. The four tastefully decorated rooms serve as a perfect base for visiting local artisans, historic sites, and the area's hill towns and vineyards. Committed to sustainable practices and predominantly powered by solar energy, all rooms feature luxurious bath amenities, a private coffee station, and a mini fridge. Italian-Canadian artist Bruno Billio, with 18 years as the resident artist at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel, channels his creative talents—spanning installation art, sculpture, and design—into La Giardina. Opened only this spring in the hills near Turin, the conversion of a 12th-century convent was both visually striking and deeply personal, with rooms named after family members and a wedding photo of his parents displayed in the sitting room. The guesthouse features Billio’s sculptural works—such as found objects woven with vibrant thread and porcelain figurines coated in black rubber—as well as contemporary paintings by other artists. Guests can enjoy views of Monviso, the Alps, vineyards, and charming hill towns beyond the estate gates.

Cà Spiga – Laglio – Lake Como
Alessandro and Andrea Motti’s grandmother was born in this house in the village of Laglio on Como’s western shore. As children, the brothers played with chickens and rabbits in the garden overlooking the water. They have now transformed their nonna’s former home and the adjacent property into a charming bed-and-breakfast, Cà Spiga. All eight rooms offer lake views, and a breakfast featuring local products from the family’s deli, Da Luciano, is served on the terrace each morning. Recently, they also began hosting Sunday lunches outdoors in the garden, with dishes from the nearby La Piazzetta in Cernobbio. Alessandro has plenty of tips to avoid the crowds in Como. He suggests driving to the northern lake beach at Domaso before lunch at Osteria Aquila d’Oro in Valle del Dosso del Liro, and ending the day at his favourite cocktail spot, Lo Scalo in Cremia.

Palazzo Cielo e Mare - Vieste, Puglia
The Gargano peninsula extends into the Adriatic and serves as Italy’s spur, characterised by striking white limestone cliffs, sandy beaches, rugged mountains, and dense forests. It offers a more unspoiled and tranquil alternative to southern Puglia. At its tip, the whitewashed town of Vieste attracts Italians in summer for its clear waters and medieval core. Overlooking the marina, Tra Cielo e Mare is a historic building, Palazzo, with just six rooms, all in white and wood; overlooking the sea in the historic centre, on the piazza della Marina Piccola. The light is the dazzling one of the Mediterranean. The tones are neutral, the materials are natural, the lines are simple. A feeling of peace and well-being envelops you as you enter the front door. Each of their rooms features balconies with sea views, and breakfast is enjoyed on the terrace facing the lighthouse, which stands on an island of its own. The nearby Spiaggia del Castello, a sandy beach bordered by the Pizzomunno monolith, is just a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Additionally, the entire peninsula is within Gargano National Park, loaded with cycling and hiking trails.
Palazzo Piccinno- Parabita, Puglia
Palazzo Piccinno reflects the true spirit of old Salento—unhurried, straightforward, and sincere. It is a rare Neo-Gothic boutique B&B in Parabita, built by the same artisans responsible for the town's famous church, featuring soaring vaulted ceilings and original tiled floors. Set on Via Coltura, in the heart of Parabita, Palazzo Piccinno is an early 20th-century Neo-Gothic house we brought back to life with the help of local artisans. Every tile, every arch, every room carries a piece of this town’s story. With just four rooms, owners Richard and Marco, the Palazzo Owners, offer a highly personalised experience that emphasises local culture and products. A garden pool with candlelit atmosphere, a resident piano, and occasional live music nights enhances this beautifully restored historic palazzo. Located inland in Parabita, Palazzo Piccinno is about a 15-minute drive from the nearest beach and Gallipoli; renting a car is advisable for coastal exploration. While there are no restaurants or supermarkets within walking distance, the town itself is walkable.
Tre Bacili – Dimora - Salento
Tre Bacili exudes an old mansion ambience. Many say it’s distant from home, yet it feels familiar. The property, which encircles the village's oldest church, offers seclusion and peace. Guests can relax here all day, enjoying tranquillity. While some hotel amenities are available, it’s not a hotel—most guests feel like they’re staying in a family home. The rooms feature tall ceilings and simple decor, with minimal adornments on walls or tables. Nonetheless, all rooms and common areas display artwork, including a mural depicting Salento’s season. I also commissioned an artist to paint the pool interior black with Greek-inspired designs and tiles. Next to the pool is a small garden with three lemon trees and five fragrant white wisteria. Composed of three restored early- and late-19th-century mansions around the oldest church in Spongano, Tre Bacili offers a private, tranquil retreat. The property emphasises sustainability, with solar panels, radiant floor heating, and refillable steel bottles replacing single-use plastics. A distinctive black swimming pool with Greek motifs, commissioned by an artist, is centrally located, surrounded by lemon trees and white wisteria. Open year-round, Tre Bacili is best visited outside Salento's colder months, especially February and March. The nearest beach is seven kilometres away, accessible by car for other coastal attractions.
