The Diplomat coming to Lucca in Tuscany

Lucca is a beautiful city in north-central Italy and was once the capital of Tuscany in medieval times. It is best known for its remarkably well-preserved Renaissance walls, built between 1504 and 1645, which still encircle the historic centre despite the city’s expansion over the centuries. Now, Netflix is bringing The Diplomat to Lucca, as Tuscany prepares to host a major international production that further strengthens the region’s status as a global film destination. Season four of the hit series will be filmed across Lucca and Florence from 13 May to 19 June 2026, drawing cast, crew, and media attention that is also expected to support local tourism.

Filming will take place in several striking locations, including Villa Reale di Marlia, which will be closed to visitors during production. The choice of locations reflects the show’s preference for refined, distinctive settings. The production is already making an impact locally, with recent casting calls in Florence and Lucca attracting strong interest—more than 1,000 people applied to work as extras in Lucca alone. Created by Debora Cahn and starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, The Diplomat follows a U.S. ambassador navigating geopolitical crises and personal tensions.

Inside the walls, Lucca offers charming shops, cafés, bars, and osterias, all set along picturesque cobblestone streets that are easy to explore on foot. The broad, tree-lined paths atop the 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are especially popular for walking and cycling. The city is also home to Casa di Puccini, the birthplace of the celebrated opera composer, now open as a museum. June is a particularly lovely time to visit, with pleasant temperatures between 24°C and 28°C and a lively calendar of cultural and musical events, all before the peak summer heat. Between the end of June and July, the Lucca Summer Festival will be hosted on Piazza Napoleone and the Walls, one of the most important music festivals in Italy, with world-class stars.
