The Calendimaggio of Assisi is a historical reenactment and spring festival held annually from May 6 to May 9. It celebrates the arrival of spring through medieval competitions between two factions: the Nobilissima Parte de Sopra and the Magnifica Parte de Sotto. During this time, the city transforms with costumed parades, music, games, and shows, culminating in the Palio being awarded. It is every year on the first Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday after May 1st.
The city is divided into two historical factions, the Nobilissima Parte de Sopra and the Magnifica Parte de Sotto, which compete in contests of skill, music, and reenactments. The typical Program consists of: Wednesday, with the entrance of the parades, the delivery of the keys, and the blessing of the banners. On Thursday, the election of Madonna Primavera and medieval games (including crossbow shooting and sled races). On Friday, nighttime shows and parades, along with "La Tenzone”, and on Saturday, the historical parades, the Song, and the final challenge, followed by the awarding of the Palio.
The streets of Assisi's historic centre come alive with medieval decorations, costumed figures, markets, taverns, and theatrical performances. The festival has ancient roots linked to pagan rites celebrating the rebirth of nature and the Roman Floralia, which have been modernised since 1954. The event is very popular and attracts thousands of visitors. Tickets are required for the main shows, while many activities in the square are free. Calendimaggio is not just a reenactment; it is a vital expression of the city's identity, combining history, tradition, and passion.
