1st of May - Labor Day in Rome

May 1st is celebrated in Italy as Labour Day, a national holiday dedicated to workers' rights and union struggles, officially established in 1947. This day is marked by parades, union rallies, and cultural events, including the famous May Day Concert in Rome. Labour Day commemorates the efforts to reduce the workday to eight hours, a movement that originated after the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886. In Rome, there is the famous May Day Concert. Organised by the unions (CGIL, CISL, UIL) in Rome, usually held in Piazza San Giovanni, the concert features numerous Italian and international artists. The May 1st Concert will be hosted by Arisa, Big Mama, and Pierpaolo Spollon, in the splendid setting of San Giovanni in Laterano. Admission is free, and it's an unmissable opportunity to enjoy some great music.

Union parades take place in many cities to advocate for workers' rights, workplace safety, and employment opportunities. And generally, it is traditional to celebrate the day with outdoor lunches, trips out of town, or visits to parks, often marking the beginning of spring.

Caracalla Park, located just steps from the famous Baths of Caracalla, will also be inaugurated on Friday, May 1, 2026. For the occasion, the new green space in the heart of the capital will host a wide range of events, including street food, comedy, live concerts, and DJ sets. Admission is free. And for the little ones? Laurentino Park is organising the "May Day at the Park" event, with many activities for children and delicious food to savour.

Foods for Primo Maggio - a timeless classic, especially in Lazio, is the pairing of fresh fava beans with Pecorino Romano. Their nutty flavour pairs well with Italian pecorino cheese made from sheep’s milk. When combined with a loaf of Italian bread, dried sausage or ham, and some wine, it makes for a perfect Italian picnic. On May Day, Italy celebrates outdoor dining, embracing spring with a rich and traditional menu.  Other common dishes include grilled meats, cured meats, traditional desserts, and delicious pasta dishes, often enjoyed during picnics. Here are some of the most popular dishes for May Day: Fava Beans and Pecorino, a symbol of Roman tradition and the "maggetto," are the most typical foods, often accompanied by salami and wine. Mixed Grill: Grilled meats such as sausages, ribs, and chops are the highlights of day trips. Regional First Courses: Classic pasta dishes like pasta all'amatriciana, lasagna, or fresh pasta with seasonal vegetables. Rustic and Savory Pies: Easter pies, rustic pizzas, and herb frittatas are also popular. Desserts and Fruit: Typical Spring desserts, tarts, and to finish, the first strawberries of the season.
