Leading designers are moving away from neutral palettes and instead embracing saturated colours and distinctive surfaces—think burgundy marble, striking wood grains, and hand-glazed tiles. Design experts note, “After many years of minimalist kitchen design, we’re observing a shift toward eclectic styles.” They see kitchens, regardless of size, as a playground for a bold mix of materials. “Layering contrasting stones, metals, and woods within a single space creates an atmosphere rich in personality that goes beyond minimalist constraints,” say the designers at Flack Studio.
This trend favours fewer plain surfaces and more visually striking materials for kitchen backsplashes. Alternative materials like recycled Vitrolite, a durable textured glass popular during the Art Deco era, are now gaining traction, alongside recycled solid marble elements from old fireplace surrounds, which are both robust and stylish.
Pantries made a strong comeback last year. Once a desirable feature for hosts, a pantry has now become an essential element in kitchen renovations. This impressive walk-in pantry features Crittall doors that open to the kitchen and includes a skylight, tall shelves, wine storage, and a solid oak ladder, all contributing to its stylish, functional design. The designers at Flack Studio assert, “Functional objects are becoming beautiful and personalized features. This includes bespoke pantries, unique lighting, and custom metal hoods.” Practical elements are now taking center stage in kitchen design. There is also a growing appreciation for craftsmanship. “Whether it’s handmade tiles, custom fixtures, or unique metalwork, more objects are being commissioned specifically for each location.” Coffee machines, ranging from espresso-makers to filter coffee devices, are being treated as design elements. As a result, kitchens are creating dedicated spaces for coffee preparation. “More coffee enthusiasts are upgrading their kitchens with high-quality filter machines and accessories,” shares Justin Howlett. A small table or a countertop corner can serve as the first step toward a home coffee bar, while integrating a bar area can benefit from a removable stone or stainless-steel tray in the cabinetry.
Another trend for 2026 is the rise of smarter kitchens. “Intelligent appliances” are redefining possibilities in modern kitchens. Future hobs will communicate directly with pots and pans, and both hobs and sinks can be lowered to adapt to their surroundings. High-end appliances will increasingly be integrated into cabinetry, hidden behind doors or panels, preventing open-plan kitchens from resembling high-end bars rather than functional workspaces.
The era of all-white kitchens is over. Following the rise of rusty reds, oranges, browns, and plums last year, this trend is set to continue into 2026. “We’re observing a clear movement away from neutrals toward rich, jewel-toned colours,” remarks Flack Studio, highlighting the popularity of burgundy marble, golden amber glass, and bold tiles or wood grains. Ultimately, the kitchen should reflect our unique personalities.
