Celebrate San Vito - Patron of Positano

The Feast of San Vito includes the blessing of dogs. The village of Positano, a pearl of the Amalfi Coast, is renowned not only for its beauty but also for its rich traditions. Every year on June 15th, during the patronal feast of San Vito, the churchyard of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Positano—where the relic bust of the saint is kept—hosts a special event: the blessing of the dogs. This occasion allows people to celebrate their beloved canine companions in a truly meaningful way. The connection between the saint and dogs arises from a legend stating that Emperor Diocletian attempted to torture the young Vito by unleashing one or more rabid dogs on him. Remarkably, the dogs not only refrained from biting the young man but were healed by him instead. This incident is what led to Saint Vito being associated with man's best friend, the dog.

On the day of San Vito in Positano, the local culinary tradition primarily features dishes made with fresh fish and typical products from the Amalfi Coast. Notable dishes to try include "scialatielli ai frutti di mare," Tramonti pizza, mixed fried seafood, and local cheeses like ricotta and mozzarella. Be sure to also sample the citrus fruits and traditional desserts, such as lemon delizia.
