Ferragosto - finally Summer Holidays in Italy!

Ferragosto is a national public holiday in Italy, always celebrated on August 15th, regardless of which day of the week it falls on and marks the beginning of summer vacation for many Italians. The term "Ferragosto" derives from the "Feriae Augusti," the festivities instituted by Emperor Augustus in 18 BC to celebrate the harvest and rest after the summer's toils. This Roman tradition later merged with the religious feast of the Assumption of Mary, celebrated on August 15th, creating a unique blend of civil and religious celebrations.  Ferragosto is a chance to unwind from the routine and enjoy some well-deserved rest, whether you choose the sea, the mountains, or the city, taking advantage of the traditions and events that enliven the Italian summer holiday period.

Many Italians head to seaside resorts, such as Sardinia, Puglia, Sicily, and the Romagna Riviera. Sardinia is known for its stunning beaches and coves, including Cala Goloritze and La Pelosa. Puglia offers beautiful sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs, such as Due Sorelle and Torre Guaceto. Sicily is home to fantastic beaches like San Vito Lo Capo and the Aeolian Islands.
